As 2014 comes to an end, a few of us at Boxing Clever Records have looked back at some of our favorite music moments from the past year. In addition to the usual “top ten” best-of lists, also included are favorite vinyl purchases, music-related inside jokes, and a single nod to Taylor Swift.

Jim Harper: Favorite albums of 2014

  1. St. Vincent – St. Vincent
  2. Tobacco – Ultima II Massage
  3. Bruiser Queen – Sweet Static
  4. Lazer/Wulf – The Beast of Left and Right

  7. Beck – Morning Phase
  8. Perfect Pussy – Say Yes to Love
  9. The New Pornographers – Brill Bruisers
  10. LVL UP – Hoodwink'd

I acquired a lot of vinyl this year. And I couldn’t be happier about it. I have favorites in both the new releases and re-issues category. There are a lot of people coming out with great releases. This list is specific to my collection and has nothing to do with release dates or availability, just what I’ve picked up and played a lot. Some of my most played this year are:

  1. Massive Attack – Mezzanine
  2. Goats – Commune
  3. Beck – Morning Phase
  4. Crocodiles – Summer of Hate
  5. The Big Lebowski – Soundtrack
  6. Tobacco – Ultima II Massage
  7. St. Vincent – St. Vincent
  8. Benjamin Booker – Benjamin Booker
  9. Brian Eno – Apollo
  10. Pixies – Surfer Rosa

Chase Koeneke: Top 10 Sounds of 2014

These are in a very particular order for very particular reasons, but I will not tell you those reasons. They are private reasons, and I will keep them to myself until the day I die.

  1. The “Wurr” Sound – My Apartment’s Heater: It’s great to know that heat is on the way, especially if you live in a frozen apartment that’s 40% windows like mine is.
  2. That iPhone “Ding” Noise – My iPhone 5S: Usually, that means someone’s just taken their turn in Words With Friends, which means I can go back to making crazy words for big points.
  3. Your Barbee Is A Wonderland – Misty Manley: Sung by our own Boxing Clever art director, Misty, this modified cover of a John Mayer classic is a beautiful ode to Boxing Clever’s Chris Barbee.
  4. Wolves – Digitalism (ft. Youngblood Hawk): It’s fun and dance-y and if you’re in the mood for motion sickness, the video is pretty good too.
  5. Dictating A Text Message To Siri – Jim Harper: Really crisp, clear vocals, but the lyrics usually don’t make any sense. I like the way he says “period” and “question mark” though.
  6. “Ka-Chunk” – Swingline Stapler: Intense. Substantial. Satisfying. Really underrated this year.
  7. Fancy – Iggy Azalea (ft. Charlie XCX): Whenever it came on during our bowling, I felt like I bowled better. Thanks, placebo effect!
  8.  Do I Wanna Know – Arctic Monkeys: It came out last year, but Artic Monkeys played at LouFest this year, and I was so tired and wanted to go home, but my girlfriend and I decided we’d stay until they played this song. When they opened with this song, tears of joy streamed from our faces, then we ran across a golf course driving range in the dark to the car, drove home and immediately went to bed. It was fantastic.
  9. The Newsroom Theme Song – The Newsroom: Man, I liked that show. Too bad it ended after three seasons. Remember when the coffee spills in the opening credits? Classic.
  10. Blaring Music From My Brand New Guitar At 3AM – My Frat Boy Neighbors: Y’know, when I first heard this track I thought “UUGH, I’M TRYING TO SLEEP! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!” but after a few listens on various occasions throughout the year, I’ve learned to…nope, actually I still hate it, and they are the worst humanity has to offer.
